How to Charge a Tesla at an RV Park (NEMA 14-50 Setup)

A campground 50-amp pedestal is a Level 2 charger wearing work clothes. With the Mobile Connector and one adapter, any Tesla wakes up full. Here is the exact setup, the settings that keep campground wiring happy, and the one adapter to leave on the shelf.

The Setup: Two Pieces of Gear

Charging a Tesla at an RV park comes down to the Mobile Connector and the NEMA 14-50 adapter that snaps onto it. The NEMA 14-50 is the four-prong 125/250-volt receptacle used at RV sites advertised as having 50-amp service, the same outlet many people install in their garage. Many full-hookup sites have one, but some provide only 30-amp TT-30 service, so check what the site actually offers when you book.

One purchase note, because Tesla's bundling has changed over the years. Since 2022, new Teslas do not come with a Mobile Connector; it is a separate purchase from Tesla's shop. The good news is that the U.S. bundle includes both the NEMA 5-15 household plug and the NEMA 14-50 adapter, so a single purchase covers the fast outlet and the slow fallback. Order it before the trip, not from a campground parking lot.

Plug the 14-50 adapter into the Mobile Connector, the Mobile Connector into the pedestal, and the cable into the car. The car handles the rest. One habit worth building: hang the Mobile Connector body off the pedestal with a carabiner or a loop of paracord so the plug and brick are not resting in the dirt.

Check the pedestal outlet before you plug in. Scorch marks, melted plastic, or a loose, wobbly fit are reasons to ask the office for a different site or skip charging. Campground outlets live a harder life than the one in your garage.

How Fast Each Tesla Charges on a 14-50

The Mobile Connector tops out at 32 amps, which works out to about 7.6 kW on a healthy 240-volt outlet no matter which Tesla you drive. A bigger onboard charger cannot help here; the Mobile Connector is the bottleneck. What separates the models is efficiency, how many miles each one wrings from a kilowatt-hour, which is why the truck charges slower than the sedans even at identical power.

One warning on the miles-per-hour column: those are unloaded numbers, and towing can cut them roughly in half depending on what is behind you. The hours-to-full column does not care what is hitched to the bumper, which makes it the better number to plan a trailer trip around.

Every row assumes the Mobile Connector's 32-amp maximum, about 7.6 kW, on a healthy 240V outlet, charging from 20% to full. Standard-range cars with smaller packs land at the short end of each range. Miles per hour are unloaded; towing cuts them sharply. Cold weather will stretch any of these times.

The Settings That Keep the Campground Happy

Your Tesla will happily pull the full 32 amps all night, and often that is fine. That said, if you do not need the speed, it can be better to reduce the amperage a little. Older parks run aging wiring, shared breakers, and long cable runs from the transformer, and every amp you do not pull is less heat in connections that may already be marginal.

There is a neighborly angle too. A campground's sites usually share upstream capacity, whether that is a feeder serving a loop of pedestals or the park's main service panel. On a summer evening with the air conditioners running, two or three EVs all pulling maximum current is exactly the kind of load that trips something shared. Charging at 24 amps instead of 32 barely changes your morning number, and it leaves headroom for the other EV drivers quietly doing the same math two sites over.

From the charging screen or the app, drop the charge current to somewhere between 24 and 32 amps. The math still works out fine: even at 24 amps you are adding well over 200 miles in a night. And unlike a Supercharger stop, an overnight AC charge gives the car all the time it needs to reach 100%, so set the limit as high as the next leg calls for; if you are towing, that is usually all the way up. Plug in when you arrive rather than at bedtime; starting early is what lets you charge gently and still leave full.

One Tesla-specific quirk to know: the car remembers your amp setting per location. That is handy at home and misleading on a road trip, because a setting saved at one campground does not carry to the next one. Set it every time you plug in somewhere new, and glance at the app after any power blip.

Watch the charging screen and Mobile Connector during the first several minutes. A steady voltage near 208 volts may be normal at some properties; the warning signs are a large drop after charging starts, unstable voltage, repeated interruptions, excessive heating, or a vehicle alert. Reduce the current or stop charging if those occur.

The 30-Amp Outlet: Leave It Alone

Some older parks only offer 30-amp TT-30 service. Tesla does not offer a TT-30 adapter for the Mobile Connector and warns against using conversion plugs. A passive TT-30 to 14-50 adapter can allow the Mobile Connector's 14-50 dongle to advertise a higher current than the 30-amp upstream circuit is designed to supply, and after a power interruption the car can revert to a charge rate the wiring cannot handle. For those reasons, we do not recommend this setup.

At a 30-amp-only park, use the Mobile Connector with its standard household plug on the pedestal's 120V outlet instead. It is slow, 3 to 5 miles of range per hour, but it is safe, and 40-plus miles by morning is often enough to reach a Supercharger. The full reasoning is in our outlet guide.

Charging Stations at the Park: Bring the J1772 Adapter

The biggest group of EV-friendly campgrounds, 245 parks in our directory, offers dedicated charging stations rather than campsite charging. Most of those stations are Level 2 units with a J1772 connector, which means a Tesla needs the small J1772 adapter to use them. Tesla currently says the J1772 adapter is included with every vehicle delivery. Confirm that yours is actually in the car before the trip, particularly if the vehicle was purchased used.

A pleasant surprise at some parks: Tesla destination chargers. A number of campgrounds installed Tesla Wall Connectors alongside or instead of J1772 units, and a few parks in our directory even list their charging as Tesla-only. The Policy Question Comes First

None of the hardware matters if the park does not allow charging, and at roughly 39% of the parks we track, it is prohibited outright. Check the park's policy in our directory before you book, then confirm at check-in: is campsite charging allowed, what does it cost, and which outlet do they want you on. Some parks include it, some charge $10 to $20 a night or meter it, and the ones that ban it sometimes back the ban with fees or eviction language.

Asking does something beyond protecting your wallet. Every polite, paying, breaker-friendly Tesla driver makes the next park a little more comfortable saying yes. The reverse is also true, and word travels fast among campground owners.

Superchargers Fill the Gaps

Campground charging is overnight charging. When you need 200 miles in half an hour instead of a whole night, that is Supercharger work, and the combination of the two is what makes Tesla road-trip camping genuinely easy: fast-charge on the highway legs, sleep-charge at the park.

Every park page on this site lists the nearest DC fast charging cities with distances and networks, so you can see at a glance whether a Supercharger sits ten minutes from the campground or fifty. In Supercharger-thin country, parts of the Mountain West especially, that number should influence which park you book. Arriving at a no-charging park with a distant Supercharger and a low battery is a self-inflicted wound.

One honest caveat before the list: Tesla expressly warns not to use an extension cord with the Mobile Connector. We are EV camping enthusiasts, not licensed electricians, and everything here is community experience, not professional electrical advice. Some campers run heavy-gauge cords anyway and accept that risk; if you do, that decision and its consequences are yours. Do your own due diligence, buy quality cable from reputable brands, keep connections dry and off the ground, and check that nothing is running hot while it is under load.

  • Mobile Connector (sold separately from Tesla since 2022; the U.S. bundle includes both the NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 14-50 adapters)
  • The NEMA 14-50 adapter from that bundle, the key to campground 50-amp outlets
  • The NEMA 5-15 household plug from the same bundle, your safe fallback at 30-amp-only parks
  • J1772 adapter for campground charging stations (Tesla says one is included with every vehicle delivery; confirm it is in the car, especially if yours was purchased used)
  • Optional, with the caveat above: a 50-amp extension cord if the pedestal tends to sit far from where the car parks. Heavy, so buy the shortest workable length
  • Optional, same caveat: a 12-gauge outdoor extension cord and a weatherproof outlet cover for slow 120V charging in the rain
  • A carabiner or short length of paracord to hang the Mobile Connector off the pedestal
