Three New States, Plus Texas Fills In

Fifty-one parks across four states this round. New Jersey, North Dakota, and West Virginia join the directory, and reader suggestions helped us add 14 more Texas parks. West Virginia's state parks are giving away free EV charging at every lodge park in the system. That got our attention.

Highlights This Month

  • New Jersey, North Dakota, and West Virginia join the directory, bringing the total to 48 US states and 4 Canadian provinces
  • West Virginia's state parks Green Initiative provides free EV charging at all ten lodge parks, from Blackwater Falls to North Bend. No fee, no app, just plug in. The most comprehensive free charging program we've documented
  • New Jersey's BPU EV Tourism Program has installed Level 2 chargers at five state parks including Cheesequake, High Point, and Wharton State Forest. The state is quietly building an EV-friendly park system
  • Thanks to the readers who sent in Texas suggestions. Fourteen new Texas parks this round, from Silver Wind charging $25/day out on the Caprock to Rayburn RV Hideout shouting "DO NOT CONNECT" in all caps. Your tips are filling in the map, keep them coming
  • Canada is next. We've been compiling parks across Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and other provinces. Expect a big batch of Canadian parks soon

Trends & Insights

  • State park systems continue to lead on EV charging infrastructure. West Virginia rolled out free charging to every lodge park in the system, and New Jersey's BPU program is putting Level 2 chargers at parks from the Pine Barrens to the Kittatinny Ridge. When a state decides to make this a priority, it shows
  • Texas remains the most polarized state in the directory. Six of 14 new parks prohibit charging outright, but the ones that allow it have clear, upfront pricing. Dominion Oaks bills separately for EV use, Vista Ridge charges a flat $20, AOK does $65/month for long-term stays. Transparency over ambiguity
  • The Sun Outdoors/Sun Retreats chain uses identical "designated locations only" language across all five New Jersey properties. Corporate templates are replacing site-by-site decisions, for better or worse
  • Canaan Valley Resort in West Virginia offers both free state-funded chargers and paid Blink stations at the same park. That dual model, free public plus paid networked, could be the future for state parks that want to serve everyone without subsidizing heavy users
